Sunday Sketchbook w/e 08.12.24
Welcome to my Sunday Sketchbook; ramblings, notes, scribbles and more.. consider it a journal dump of the previous weeks work. Hopefully this gives you an opportunity to see my works in progress and perhaps more importantly, my process and the ruminations keeping me up at night!
Unit 2 Short Film
A short 3-minute film capturing my art practice as part of my Unit 2 assessment for my MA Fine Art Digital. Thoroughly enjoyed creating this but very hard to capture everything I wanted to in just 3 minutes!

Unit 2 Assessment
A Happy Accident
I have been preparing recently for the public voting day at The Storey in Lancaster, as the Lancaster & Morecambe Repair Cafe have been put forward for potential National Lottery funding of Pots of Possibility. In just a few short months, it has gone from a lingering idea to a group with over 500 members, 89 volunteers and a small but strong team of committee members. I have been recognised in the local news and have people contact me regularly including being asked to give a talk next week at our local Environmentalist group. It has been a whirlwind, but a privilege all the same.
Tutorial #3
I had my third tutorial with Jonathan on Friday 15th November. It was slightly last minute as I had seen an opening in the calendar just a few hours earlier, and felt I didn’t want to delay an opportunity to discuss my current work and progress with Jonathan.
Music & Lyrics
Much of my work is very multi-disciplinary. I love to experiment with different mediums, but for a long time this felt somewhat disconnected. It’s only relatively recently that I see the profound connections between all of my work - from my love of painting to my obsession with music, poetry and nature.
Franz Kline and the Exploration of Identity through Abstract Expressionism in Mid-20th Century America
The 20th century bore witness to what could arguably be considered a mere fleeting movement of Abstract Expressionism. Nevertheless, key Action Painters of the time introduced the American art world to a reactionary encounter, whereby any traditional tenets of drawing were rejected in favour of systems of monolithic colour (Kozloff, M. 1967:105). This paper delves deeper into the life and influences of Franz Kline and how his work and artistic journey was largely shaped by his personal identity, as well as Kline’s relationship with contemporaries such as Willem de Kooning, Robert Motherwell and Adolph Gottlieb and how their collective identity as Abstract Expressionists shaped both their individual and group identities.
The Matter of The Heart
Light Up Lancaster is one of my favourite events in our local calendar. Not just the sense of community and beautiful bustling dark evenings in the city, but I absolutely love seeing the art installations all lit up. I have been fortunate enough to see some incredible installations by some great artists over the years, so I was delighted to be invited to get involved with one of them for Light Up 2024.

Approaching the canvas without certainty
Following the session where we were introduced to some of the work by William Kentridge, I began investigating more of his work. I came across his recent exhibition at Arsenale Institute for Politics of Representation in Venice, where he collaborates with curator Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev, to premiere his new nine-episode video series, ‘Self-Portrait as a Coffee-Pot.’
Halloween Fundraiser
Earlier this week I announced a competition on my social media, which gave folk the opportunity to win an original painting of Joker that I created. The competition was simultaneously raising money on gofundme for a project which hopes to provide art workshops to young people in care or non-mainstream education throughout the district of Lancaster & Morecambe.
GROTTO Submission
This week was the deadline for the GROTTO prints, which I was able to finalise and submit yesterday. I became a little worried towards the deadline as I didn’t feel completely happy with the final development of my cyanotypes, but got there in the end thankfully!

Exploring Cyanotype
I have recently been exploring the idea of print making in more detail, in the lead up to Grotto at CSM this November. Of course, I could simply do a print of a painting or drawing, but I have really enjoyed exploring the different forms of print during the Grotto sessions. I have previously experimented with lino prints and I did a woodblock carving and print when I lived in the canal a few years ago. I think it is important to experiment with different disciplines from time to time. As I also love photography, I happened across some cyanotype examples recently, and decided to explore it further.
Replicating Kline..
I have been delving into the world of Franz Kline as part of research for my upcoming research paper. Being particularly interested in what he was trying to portray in his work, what he hoped his work would do, or how he felt during the process, I began to consider creating some paintings of my own.
An Interpretation of Franz Kline
This week I found myself thinking more about the work of Franz Kline and whilst simultaneously reading some work by Deleuze and Guattari, it got me thinking about the perspective of artworks - is our interpretation determined by our pre-existing knowledge or experience? educational level? and ultimately our socio-economic environment?
