Music & Lyrics

Much of my work is very multi-disciplinary. I love to experiment with different mediums, but for a long time this felt somewhat disconnected. It’s only relatively recently that I see the profound connections between all of my work - from my love of painting to my obsession with music, poetry and nature.

As a result, I often enjoy bringing music and poetry into my art practice, as a way to enhance what I’m trying to convey and provide a more engaging experience for myself as well as the audience. In this piece I wrote the poem, composed and recorded the music on piano and filmed some short scenes around Morecambe Bay.

This was largely about my identity (or struggle with!), and the way that we can’t feel the profound effects of love and joy without having had tremendous pain to compare it to, and that we must find a balance.

I am a self-taught pianist and also play the cello in an orchestra in Lancaster. The Lancaster Music Centre is a real haven for me and I have thoroughly enjoyed my time rehearsing and performing with the group. Incidentally, I decided to do my Music Theory exams this year, as I have never done them and received my result this week from my first one, which I passed with Distinction! I’m over the moon, and am considering composition of my music in more of my art practice.
