Tutorial #3

I had my third tutorial with Jonathan on Friday 15th November. It was slightly last minute as I had seen an opening in the calendar just a few hours earlier, and felt I didn’t want to delay an opportunity to discuss my current work and progress with Jonathan.

I began by giving an update on my recent health issues, which I felt had interrupted my research and art practice more than I would have liked. I explained my recent mantra of “just one thing”, which had really helped me to keep some level of momentum with my work, even on bad days. Following treatment, I now feel more energised and back on track, and indeed excited once again about the way my art and research is going.

We discussed my current podcast, which Jonathan had recently listened to, and also commented on my regular Sunday Sketchbook, which I felt was a great way to summarise recent work and ideas, and Jonathan agreed.

I mentioned how useful I felt the small group discussions had been in the weekly seminars, particularly opportunities to share work and gain feedback. I told Jonathan about a recent mishap with a banner I had been hand-painting for the Lancaster & Morecambe Repair Cafe, which had resulted in me redecorating my kitchen wall, and then sifting through my doom pile of artwork. After coming across a box of assorted frames at my local recycle warehouse in Morecambe, I decided to reframe some of this old work which I had initially saw as failed attempts that had somehow escaped the bin. What ensued was a complete revival in my work, after reframing those pieces. I actually went from disliking them to loving them, simply be changing the composition and perspective - I saw them in a whole new light and am now thrilled to see a sample of them on my kitchen wall.

This, along with discussing the progress of my research paper, led to a discussion where Jonathan pointed out how successful my research so far had actually been, and along with the reframing of my old doom pile, had given me a new sense of discovery and drive. I will be creating a post to discuss this in more detail, but for now this was a very positive tutorial, thanks to Jonathan’s insight and prompts.

Moving forward I will be:

  • Thinking further about the concept of reframing and seeing things from a different perspective

  • Completing the curation of my blog and video bringing a close to Unit 2

  • Continuing my exploration of materials and creation of new pieces

  • Continuing my Sunday Sketchbook Series and Podcast

  • Thinking further about the connection between my choice of colour and tone and the outdoors as my therapy

  • Continuing my thoughts around my future practice and research into possible PhD supervisors
