Pop-Up Shop Raw Deal
I’ve noticed more and more pop-up craft shops and galleries opening up, in different areas. I love the way local councils are utilising empty shops on the high street, and giving artists an opportunity to showcase their work.
The Case of the Red Shoes
I came across an art installation in the centre of Lancaster earlier this week. I was immediately drawn to it and went over to speak to the artists involved, to find out more.
Functional Fibres
During a regular trip to Grasmere earlier this year, I picked up some beautiful Herwick tops, which had been stored away all summer waiting for a flash of inspiration. A warm feeling in the pit of my stomach emerged, as I came across them during a sort through some boxes. I decided to play around with the wool using a felting needle, and see what I could come up with.
Exploring Raw Materials Pt.2
I noticed the colour of the mortar mix begin to lighten as the moisture evaporated. When the colour of the top section appeared more uniformal, I decided to unwrap the lego mould from the concrete. I was pretty nervous, but simultaneously excited to see the results. Would it be dry properly? Would it collapse or break whilst removing the mould?
Exploring Raw Materials
Since being drawn to the demolition site in Warrington, I have been keen to explore the parallels with our fragmented society. To begin with, I decided to recreate a section of the building in the original image.
Tutorial #1
A Texture Exploration
I have recently been interested in exploring different materials as part of my art practice, largely inspired by others in my peer group and recent exhibitions I have attended.
Artifacts as Art?
I attended the Slave Trade exhibition at Lancaster’s central museum this afternoon. I have always been interested in 18th and 19th century history, but was particularly drawn to the artifacts that had been recovered and preserved.
The Opening of ICONS
Preparations for the ICONS exhibition were hard work, to say the least. One of the things that really struck me, was so many things that were sacrificed in order to achieve what I wanted to with the exhibition. It made me question whether it was all worth it. Time will tell.
A Different Perspective
I found myself in Warrington, following an impromptu trip on the train. I was pleasantly surprised at the variety of independent shops and the way the shopping areas spanned out like a spider’s web, from a central undercover social area. As I sauntered through the streets, a construction site caught my eye, and I couldn’t tear myself away from a building which was in mid-demolition.
A Risk Set in Stone
I felt quite excited by the task of taking a risk; the welcome encouragement to try something new, experiment, like being given permission to play. This turned out to be one of the best opportunities I could have been given, and for reasons I least expected.
A New Perspective on DONUTS
Earlier last week, I decided to have a look online and see what my local theatres were showing, hoping for something new and fresh. A one off performance of Donuts at The Dukes theatre caught my attention, as did a blurb featuring words such as, jazz, funk, 90s, contemporary dance…I grabbed a ticket and looked forward to an hour of being transported away from the presently mundane, filled with political and economic chaos.
THAT first presentation…
In perfect Sara style, I prepared my reference images on Miro, along with a few question prompts, and felt ready to share my journey with the world.
Don’t Stop Believin’
Journey. 1981. Granted, two years prior to my entrance into this world, but a song that evokes memories of love, life and laughter, albeit without truly grasping the meaning of the song. At least, to me.
