Tutorial #2

I had my second tutorial on Thursday 2nd February at 9.30am with Jonathan Kearney.

Following on from our last one-to-one session, I began by outlining my progress since then. I was able to show Jonathan the concrete cross-section I had made using lego as a mould, and how fascinated and excited I was by the process. I explained that I hope to use concrete in the interim show, with ideas around an inverted pyramid and the contrast between this material and natural wool. Jonathan was able to give me advice on how to create a floating effect, by using armature wire, which thankfully, I have lots of!

We also discussed my involvement in exhibitions, the post graduate community, as recently appointed online ambassador and taking part in the upcoming Creative Hack. I expressed my concerns that I may have taken on too much, yet felt I was able to use my research within all these areas; learning from the outside communities as I progress. Jonathan explained that, the fact I had identified this, perhaps no longer meant it was a problem. This was encouraging.

I also discussed the challenges I had been facing in recent months, with ill health and financial obstacles, but explained my intention to learn from these obstacles, ensure I create contingencies in my planning to account for potential obstacles in the future. We discussed the use of padlet’s timeline feature to create my plan, which I will be incorporating into my Study Statement, and Jonathan reassured me that my intention to create a more visual statement and final piece for my Unit 1 assessment, was absolutely fine. Finally, Jonathan commented on the playful aspects to my work so far, which I take as a compliment!

Moving forward, I will be focussing on the following:

  • Completing and publishing my Study Statement

  • Curating my blog for Unit 1 Assessment

  • Attending the Creative Hack in London

  • Attending the low res with my cohort

  • Developing my interim show submission

  • Completing the RAMS form

  • Experimenting further with concrete moulds and structures

  • Developing my sketchbook work

Overall, I felt the tutorial went well, Jonathan was very helpful and encouraging, and I feel he has helped my self-confidence within my current art practice.
