Changing Places

A few days ago I was daydreaming about the idea of hanging up some of my cyanotypes in a tree. I was curious to see how it would look, how others may respond and how it might somehow change the feeling of my work.

I took about half a dozen smaller fabric cyanotypes along with a handful of small bulldog clips, and not forgetting a flask of tea and headed on down to the park.

Picking a tree I liked actually proved harder than I thought. It’s too small, too tall, too bare, not the right shade of green..in the end, I opted for a cluster of smaller trees that were high above a wall, but I liked that there were some wildflowers growing just beneath.

I climbed up and began clipping them individually to the smaller narrow branches. I got down and stepped back to take a look and really liked what I saw. What I found most intriguing was hearing the wind and seeing the light muslin fabric gently blowing too and fro in the breeze. So, naturally capturing it on video was a must!

I love how this close-up one behaved like a flag blowing in the wind, attached to its little mast. It made me feel like I was staking my territory and saying, yes! now I have made it..

I then decided to do a mock-up of the fabric pieces in a long line, similarly to how I hope it will look at the final show, but this was on a much smaller scale.

They seemed to naturally curve round towards themselves, create a long cylindrical shape. Overall, I loved doing this and look forward to doing some more out in the open.
